- Living Kidney Donor for His Spouse
Jon (Sully) Sullenberger became a living donor as part of his wife’s second transplant in 2019. While Sully was not a match for his wife, he overcame this incompatibility by registering to donate one of his kidneys through the National Kidney Registry’s Paired Donation program.
Having gone through two transplants with his spouse, Sully believes that education is key for donors and recipients. His mentoring focus is centered around achieving the best possible outcomes for both groups. He feels that mentors must be well versed on donation options, the matching process, and available support and protections afforded to donors and recipients. This belief guided him to become a Microsite Donor Mentor for the National Kidney Registry. Sully has been a mentor since 2021.
Sully was commissioned as an Infantry Officer from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1984. During his 23-year career, he was assigned and deployed to Pacific Command (PACOM), Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), Northern Command (NORTHCOM), and Central Command (CENTCOM).
In 2007, Sully retired from the military and continued to serve for 16 more years as an Army Civilian with the United States Army Medical Command (MEDCOM). During civilian service, he served as a Program Analyst assisting Wounded Warriors and their families transitioning from military service, a Clinical Analyst enabling evidence-based analysis of Health Outcomes, and finally as a Data Analyst working to determine the effectiveness of health care delivery systems.
Sully earned a Master of Science in Management from the University of Saint Mary in 1998. He currently resides in Olympia, WA. He competes regularly in the Living Donor Games and enjoys swimming and surfing.
